Conscientious Objectors

Others claimed exemption on the grounds of conscience, citing religious beliefs, anti-war pacifism and others who refused to accept that Germany was Britain’s enemy. Some were prepared to do non fighting duties as stretcher bearers or work in munitions factories and all had to argue their case at a Tribunal.

Conscientious Objectors were not generally well received, but many stood by their principles in the face of some tough questioning by the Tribunal members. Those attending Tribunals were given leave to appeal after their initial appearance, which was made locally. These would be at County level, where the Military Representative would also have the right of appeal if he thought the applicant had got ‘too much of the deal’. If the appeal went to its third stage this would be at National level, as there was only one Central Tribunal sitting in the United Kingdom.
